Sonolux : Speculative Future
Media Art InstallationSonolux is a multi-sensory installation inspired by research into the acoustic ecology of Graz’s Hilmteich area and the effects of urbanization, particularly the construction of the LKH hospital near this natural site. The project envisions speculative futures for the area, presenting two contrasting scenarios — one utopian and one dystopian — alongside a reflection on the current state.
By exploring how urban development influences natural soundscapes, Sonolux highlights the importance of acoustic ecology and thoughtful sound design in both public and private spaces. Subtle visual elements enhance the sonic impressions, creating an immersive experience that invites reflection on the relationship between human activity, urbanization, and the natural environment.
Sonolux was presented at the Klanglicht Festival 2024 in Graz, Austria, hosted in the atmospheric Dom im Berg (Schlossbergstollen) and at the Luna Festival 2025 in Leeuwarden, Netherlands. The project was developed together with other sound and interaction designers and my personal involvement consisted in doing field recordings from the locations, creating the utopian atmospheres as well as mixing the whole sonic piece.
